KATHERINE Jenkins is to headline this year's BBC Proms in the Park in Glasgow.

The opera singer, who is one of the country's biggest selling classical artists, will perform with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Stephen Bell at the open-air event in Glasgow Green on September 13.

She said: "It's always such an honour to be asked to perform at the Proms and this time is even more exciting because it will be my first Prom in Scotland. Glasgow is a wonderful city that holds some great memories for me and it's also where my grandmother was from."

This year's celebrations will include a live big-screen link-up to the Royal Albert Hall for a family sing-along from Disney's Mary Poppins. It will feature on BBC One's coverage while the first half of the show will be broadcast live on BBC Two Scotland.

Donalda MacKinnon, Head of Programmes and Services BBC Scotland, said: "There's always a very special atmosphere at Proms in the Park, thanks to the enthusiasm of the Scottish Prommers and I know this year will be another night to remember."

Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said the event would be one of the cultural highlights of the year.
