Popular online retailer Asos has suffered "substantial damage" to its warehouse after a fire broke out overnight.

The company, which confirmed that no one had been hurt, said the incident in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, had forced them to stop taking any orders.

A statement posted on their Facebook page said: "We experienced a fire in our warehouse tonight and fortunately nobody was hurt. We understand there has been substantial damage but it's too early to ascertain the extent.

"We will not be taking any orders in the meantime. Sincere apologies for the inconvenience."

The warehouse is said to contain over 10 million boxes of packaging and is more than 60,000 square metres in size.

The retailer sells fashion and beauty products around the globe and last year made sales of over £750 million.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "The fire at the Asos warehouse is now out. One fire engine is still there with thermal imaging cameras to ensure it doesn't reignite."

They confirmed that 10 engines, including three from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, had been sent to tackle the blaze.

Michael Dugher, MP for Barnsley East , tweeted last night: "Huge thanks to the brilliant crews from @SYFR + @West_Yorks_FRS for tackling the @ASOS fire. They do a magnificent job. Glad no one hurt."
