STARS of the Edinburgh Fringe are to perform in Glasgow this summer at a new comedy festival.

Eight acts will travel west for the Magners Summer Comedy shows, which take place on two dates at the newly refurbished Kelvingrove Bandstand in the city's west end.

A music festival - the Magners Summer Nights series of concerts - has already been announced. The Sunday Herald is the media partner for both the comedy and the music events. Hosted by award winning comedian and presenter Stephen K Amos, the Best of The Fest in the West shows will include comedy acts Hannah Gadsby, Pete Firman, Frisky & Mannish and Abandoman.

Karen Koren, the artistic director of Fringe venue the Gilded Balloon, recruited the talent. She said: "I am very excited to be presenting comedy at this brilliant new festival. Edinburgh tends to steal the limelight when it comes to summer comedy so it's great to work with Magners in bringing some of the world-class acts from the Fringe through to Glasgow."

The two-hour afternoon comedy shows will take place on August 9 and August 16. The music festival is taking place over the two weekends.

Shows featuring The Waterboys, Steve Earle, Squeeze and Teenage Fanclub have already sold out, while The Silencers, who will be playing an acoustic set, and Glasgow band The Bluebells, are the latest to add their names to the bill.

Mark Mackie, director of promoters Regular Music, said: "Karen and the Gilded Balloon have put a great line up together and, at only a tenner a ticket, it's the summer's best deal."

The Kelvingrove Bandstand, in Kelvingrove Park, reopened recently following a £2.1m revamp. Originally opening in 1924, the 2500 capacity venue was shut down in 1999 after it fell into disrepair. Belle and Sebastian are set to perform at the bandstand next month in a separate event to coincide with the opening of the Commonwealth Games.

Paul Condron, marketing director for Magners, added: "We've already had a fantastic response to the music acts performing at Summer Nights and we're sure people will be equally as impressed with the comedy line-up."
