ANDREW Fairlie has been named the UK's chef of the year in a prestigious awards ceremony.

The man behind his eponymous restaurant at the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire saw off competition from Sat Bains, Tom Kerridge and Nathan Outlaw to receive the award at The Cateys, run by The Caterer.

Mr Fairlie said it had been an "amazing" two days after he also won the best restaurant in Scotland award from Restaurant magazine. He said: "To get recognition from our peers after 14 years in business is testimony to the incredibly hard work from everyone ."

Each of the nominees can already boast two Michelin stars. Mr Bains tweeted his congratulations, describing Mr Fairlie as a "true legend amongst us".

The Caledonian in Edinburgh and the Grand Central in Glasgow were each shortlisted for the hotel of the year award, but lost out to the Midland Hotel in Manchester.
