A 74-year-old woman kept more than 10 dogs in "shocking" conditions in cramped, filthy cages in her living room and the smell was so bad it made an animal welfare inspector gag, a court has heard.

Scottish SPCA inspector Nicola Liddell told Falkirk Sheriff Court the state of Ann Wynd's home at Windyrigg Farm in Standburn, near Falkirk, was unhealthy for humans and there were dog faeces inches thick on the floor of the living room and up the walls.

Two of the animals found were in such poor condition they had to be put down. Both struggled to move, with a vet describing one as "almost paraplegic".

Wynd is on trial accused of 32 separate animal cruelty charges relating to 19 dogs, two donkeys, two goats, one sheep and five ponies.

Wynd denies the charges and is representing herself.

The trial, before Sheriff Derek O'Carroll, continues.
