Great British Bake Off star James Morton has been unveiled as the new ambassador for the Beatson Cancer Charity.

Morton, who is a medical student at Glasgow University, shared some baking tips and tasty treats with patients and staff at the charity's wellbeing centre during a visit earlier today.

The GBBO finalist has seen first-hand the inspiring work the charity funds after his mother received treatment at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.

The centre serves around 50% of the Scottish population and the wellbeing centre, which offers reiki, hypnotherapy, massage, reflexology, beauty therapies, a hair salon, soft drinks bar and cinema, is just one of the services the charity funds.

Funds raised by the charity provide specialist posts, enhanced medical equipment, innovative service developments, novel research projects, developmental staff training and a range of complementary therapies to help patients manage the side effects of their treatments.

Morton said: "As a medical student I am only too aware of the impact cancer has in Scotland and this is amplified when someone close to you is diagnosed. It is then that you really appreciate the phenomenal care offered at the Beatson.

"I am so proud to be an ambassador for the Beatson Cancer Charity and support its invaluable work in any way I can. The wealth of services and staff it supports are vital for patients, from cutting edge equipment to giving them a place to relax with a cup of tea and a friendly face."

David Welch, chief executive of the Beatson Cancer Charity, said: "It's fantastic to have James on board as an ambassador. Through personal experience he knows the difference that the Beatson Cancer Charity and its fundraising efforts can make to patients during what is such a difficult time. We're extremely grateful that he has chosen to give his time to help us raise the profile of the charity and support our fundraising."
