MORE than 3000 people have signed up to use Glasgow's Mass Automated Cycle Hire scheme since its launch last month.

Users register online or over the phone.

Casual users pay an initial £10, which credits them for their first rides. Those with a smartphone can rent and return bikes using a special app. They pay £1 per half hour, capped at £10 for up to 24 hours.

Annual members pay £60 and are issued with a radio frequency identification card that can be swiped over the cycle's on-board computer to speed up the hire process.

They enjoy free hire for the first 30 minutes and pay £1 an hour after that, capped at £5 for up to 24 hours.

The sturdy bikes are built for reliability and comfort rather than speed. They have a combination lock, a basket on the handlebars, lights, three gears, a kickstand and a saddle with a quick-release height adjuster.

They also have GPS system to confirm when bikes have been returned - or find them if they go missing.
