A GRANDMOTHER is drawing on a lifetime of caring experience to bring emotional comfort to people with life-limiting illness in their own homes.

Sarah Thomson (pictured), from Wishaw, was the first recruit in North Lanarkshire's new volunteer support scheme, known as the Community Palliative Care project, which has been set up through the nationwide Reshaping Care for Older People (RCOP) programme.

The outreach programme sees specially-trained befriending volunteers work alongside two specialist community-based palliative nurses from St Andrew's and Strathcarron Hospice.

"I got involved in the project through Voluntary Action North Lanarkshire who have trained me on key aspects of communication and listening in palliative care," said Sarah. "It's often, the simple things that make a huge difference."
