An RAF serviceman who died following a motorcycle crash on a military base has been named as Sergeant Peter Wildman.

Police were called to a road within RAF Lossiemouth in Moray at around 9.15pm on Tuesday after a collision involving a red Honda VFR 1200 motorcycle.

The 49-year-old was employed at the base but was off duty at the time of the incident.

The RAF said the serviceman was ''extremely popular'' and will be missed.

A spokesman said: ''The RAF can confirm the tragic death of a serviceman from RAF Lossiemouth in a road traffic accident on July 15.

''The deceased will be greatly missed on the station, where he was an extremely popular individual. We are acutely aware that he leaves behind close family and friends, and the thoughts and prayers of our personnel go out to them at this most difficult time.''

Police Scotland said an investigation will be carried out together with the air force, in line with standard procedure.

A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
