EDINBURGH'S controversial trams system ground to a halt after one of its fleet broke down.

Transport for Edinburgh (TfE) said there was a "service interruption" after one tram came to a halt at Haymarket towards the west of the city centre.

A spokesman for TfE said tickets for the trams were valid on Lothian Buses for the duration of the disruption. The spokesman was unable to say why the breakdown had affected the entire tram system.

He said: "We won't know until the tram is back in the depot and has been looked at."
