A JIHADIST from Aberdeen who appeared in a video for an extremist Islamic group has been in touch with his parents to let them know he is still alive, according to reports.

Abdul Rakib Amin, 26, appeared in a video for the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) urging British Muslims to fight in Syria and later said he was prepared to die for his cause.

There was speculation last month that he had been killed by Iraqi special forces but it later emerged that the reports were wrong and it was another fighter with a similar name who had died.

A family spokesman, Maqbool Chaudry, told the Sun on Sunday that Mr Amin had contacted his parents directly. "He heard about the confusion out there himself," he said. "He got in touch with his parents to let them know he was okay.

"It's a relief. But we know that it's only a matter of time before something happens to him. He's playing with fire, it's chaos. He might not get hurt today or tomorrow but it will happen."

Mr Amin is among 500 people from the UK fighting in the conflict in Syria.

He was born in Bangladesh and moved to Aberdeen when he was around ten years old, attending Sunnybank Primary School and St Machar Academy.
