Commonwealth Games star Lynsey Sharp has become embroiled in a social media row with a cross-country runner after the pair exchanged a series of sarcastic tweets.

The Scot revealed after winning silver in the 800m at Hampden last Friday that she had been up the previous night with a sickness bug.

However, Andy Vernon, an English athlete who competed in the 10,000 metres in Glasgow last week and represents Team GB took exception to her remarks.

After Sharp tweeted yesterday that she planned to buy a handbag to celebrate, Vernon replied: "You won a medal? You should mention it now and again."

She responded to his comments by stating: "It's not my fault cross country doesn't get quite as much publicity."

Vernon then tweeted: "self publicity isnt quite the same. And I dont use a drip to get my medals."

An hour later, Sharp retaliated by calling him Andy "Vermin." She added: "I had 5 ml of fluid through a drip, about the same volume as one tear I just cried looking at your performances."

Vernon later asked Sharp to accept his apologies, and said he will formally say sorry face to face, but what had started out as a joke had 'got out of hand.'
