JEWISH leaders say they are horrified by Glasgow City Council's plan to fly the Palestinian flag at the City Chambers.

The local authority said tomorrow's move was an act of solidarity with the people of Gaza and Bethlehem, which are twinned with the city.

Lord Provost Sadie Docherty said: "Glasgow is home to many friends of Palestine and this is a deeply distressing time for them."

However, Paul Morron, president of the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council, called on the authority to abandon the plan.

He said: "I am horrified by this, and the Jewish Community in Glasgow will be greatly upset and hurt by this decision of Glasgow City Council.

"This is the worst type of gesture politics and it will contribute nothing to bringing peace any nearer.

"I call on the city of Glasgow not to proceed with this."
