A HISTORIC industrial crane in Japan is to be the final landmark scanned by experts from Scotland in an international effort to record important landmarks across the globe.
The Scottish designed and built Nagasaki Giant Cantilever Crane will be the final international site for the Scottish Ten laser scanning and digital documentation project, culture secretary, Fiona Hyslop, announced yesterday at a cultural summit in Edinburgh.
The project is digitally documenting Scotland's five UNESCO World Heritage Sites and five international heritage sites.
The crane, which was built in 1909, is still regularly used by the Mitsubishi group, and is a landmark in Nagasaki Harbour. It was designed by the Glasgow Electric Crane and Hoist Company - which was operating under the name of Appleby, and it was constructed by the Motherwell Bridge Company.
The crane is one of only 11 of its kind known to survive, including the Titan Crane in Clydebank.
