The Scottish government has announced that robotic-assisted surgery will take place in two new theatres at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

The innovative technology which is already in place around the world has never been utilised in Scotland before. The technology mimics the surgeon's hand movements through remote controls meaning incredibly intricate tasks can be performed from a distance. The entire process is screened in 3D high definition video images revolutionising the way keyhole surgery is carried out.

The cancer charity UCAN has been a driving force in the campaign for this technology to be brought to the north-east of Scotland and after a £1 million pledge from the Scottish Government, the robotic-assisted surgical system will be put in place.

Health Secretary Alex Neil met with the surgical team in Aberdeen this morning to discuss the benefits of the robotic systems to health care in Scotland.
