A WOMAN was attacked during an independence referendum rally in Glasgow yesterday.

An eyewitness told the Sunday Herald she had been assaulted by a pro-Union campaigner.

Police were called to Argyle Street just before 4pm yesterday amid complaints of a "heated debate" ongoing between 40 to 50 Yes and No campaigners.

Eyewitness David McGovern, 20, said the woman tried to grab a megaphone from a pro-Union speaker.

McGovern said: "There were two men from the No camp who were speaking about the referendum.

"One of the men was speaking when this woman came up and tried to grab the megaphone from him. This went on for a few minutes before she went to the other guy and started pointing at him and he kicked her.

"She fell back and ended up on the ground for about 10 to 15 minutes.

"An ambulance was called but was cancelled because the woman got up and seemed to be OK."

A spokesman for Police Scotland confirmed they attended at the scene after receiving a report of an assault on a woman. He added that inquiries were ongoing, and was unable to confirm if it was a Yes or No campaigner who carried out the attack.
