A man has been arrested after Labour MP Jim Murphy was hit by an egg while campaigning ahead of the independence referendum.

The politician was addressing people in Fife as part of his 100 Towns In 100 Days tour of Scotland for Better Together when the incident happened last Thursday.

Police Scotland said that a 45-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged assault during a disturbance in Kirkcaldy High Street.

He is expected to appear at the town's Sheriff Court tomorrow.
