A MAN has been jailed for 16 months after he posted a number of hate-filled comments about religious and ethnic groups and discussed genocide and joining terror group Islamic State on a social network.
Abdul Hafes, 35, of Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, had pled guilty to intending to stir up hatred on religious grounds at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the Twitter remarks on June 21 this year.
In some comments, Hafes said he "hates Shia and Kurds" and called for them to die like the Jews did at the hands of Nazi Germany.
Hafes, who said he was drunk when he made the postings, commented he wanted to join Islamic State in Iraq and asked for information to be emailed to him.
He was arrested after someone online spotted the vile comments and went to the police.
Following sentencing yesterday, David Harvie, Procurator Fiscal for West of Scotland, said the sentence handed down by Sheriff John Beckett QC would encourage others to report similar offences.
He said: "Hopefully the conviction and sentencing of Abdul Hafes will encourage the public to report all such crimes to the police.
"They can have the confidence that they will be investigated carefully and prosecuted robustly."
Hafes' remarks about Shia and Kurds included his suggestion they should die like Jews did at the hands of Hitler.
Hafes, had phones, laptops and iPads seized during a raid on his home.
He initially said he could not remember posting the comments because of alcohol intoxification.
