The new theatrical version of Alasdair Gray's novel Lanark has cancelled its first preview night at the Citizen's Theatre in Glasgow.

The theatre, which is previewing the "huge multi-media" production in Glasgow before it is staged at the Edinburgh International Festival, said that technical issues had forced the cancellation of the first night of the show.

The new adaptation of the classic novel has been written by David Greig and is directed by Graham Eatough.

The theatre said that the first night of the play, officially also a preview, will go ahead as planned on Saturday.

A statement from the Citizen's Theatre said: "Lanark: A Life in Three Acts is a huge multi-media production involving sophisticated video, sound, lighting and scenery.

"Unfortunately, we currently have technical issues which will not be resolved in time for us to present the complete production at the first preview at the Citizens Theatre on Friday 14 August.

"As a result, we have made the decision to cancel the performance, and have contacted all affected patrons today to offer tickets for an alternative performance date, or a full refund."

It adds: "We know that this will come as a disappointment to the patrons affected, and hope that as many of them as possible will be able to join us later in the run for what is promising to be a spectacular show.

"All of the other scheduled performances will go ahead as advertised, and we’re looking forward to opening Lanark: A Life in Three Acts to the public on Saturday."

Gray himself, 80, is currently recuperating in hospital after suffering broken bones in his back after a bad fall.

The lead role in the play is to be played by actor Sandy Grierson.

Grierson is joined by a cast of Scottish actors: Andy Clark, George Drennan, Jessica Hardwick, Paul Thomas Hickey, Louise Ludgate, Helen Mackay and Gerry Mulgrew.

Camrie Palmer and Ewan Somers make their professional debuts.

Grierson’s recent performance credits include a number of Scottish cultural figures.

In 2014 he played Ivor Cutler in The Beautiful Cosmos of Ivor Cutler and musician Martyn Bennett in Grit: The Martyn Bennett Story.

Grierson has previously played the title role of Lanark in the BBC Radio 4 adaptation by Robin Brooks.

New music and songs for the production have been created by composer Nick Powell, on which he has worked with a number of musicians.

They include Chin Keeler, Ted Milton, Lucy Wilkins and Alex Lee, a former member of Suede who has toured with Placebo, Nick McCarthy of Franz Ferdinand and Sarah Wilson, cellist with Belle and Sebastian.

Designer Laura Hopkins, Lighting Designer Nigel Edwards and Video Artist Simon Wainwright complete the creative team.

Lanark previews at the Citizens Theatre to 17 August, then transfers to the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh until 31 August.

The production then returns to the Citizens from September 3 to 19.
