Trainspotting actor Peter Mullan has taken a trip into the past for a new film about Old Tom Morris, the father of golf.

The Scots actor and director is playing Old Tom in the movie based on Kevin Cook's book which is about the golfing pioneer's relationship with his son, young Tommy, played by Borders actor Jack Lowden.

Filming at Winterfield Golf Course in East Lothian began this week with director Jason Connery, son of Bond actor Sir Sean, among the famous faces on the fairway.

Set in Victorian St Andrews, where the movie is also to be partly filmed, the story opens in 1866 with Old Tom already a legend as greenkeeper for the Royal & Ancient Golf Club, where he established the standard of 18 holes per round and was three times winner of the first major golf tournament, the Open Championship, which he founded in 1860.

Mullan said earlier that "it's a lovely wee script".

He said: "I know nothing about golf, but I'm looking forward to it."

Director Connery said: “I am so incredibly passionate and excited to tell this story.

"It is a story that is truly close to my heart as I grew up with my father on a golf course, and I have a home an hour from St Andrews.

"This is an extraordinary and intimate tale of love and family at the beginning of the great game of golf.”

Producer Bob Last designed a number of shows for the Traverse Theatre before going into film, and also founded the record label Fast Product, managing bands including the Human League and Scriotti Politti.

The Facebook feed for Tommy's Honour wished Sir Sean well on his 85th birthday on August Tuesday, posting: "A Very Happy Birthday to our Director's Father - Sir Sean Connery."
