A Scottish parliamentary candidate has been suspended from the SNP after 36 years in the party.

Andy Doig was temporarily removed from the organisation after a private e-mail was leaked to HQ.

Mr Doig currently serves on Renfrewshire Council as the elected representative for Johnstone North, Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch and was aiming to become the MSP for Renfrewshire South.

The 53-year-old says the party have accused him of having misogynistic and homophobic views.

But he insists that his comments were satirical in nature and were included in a spoof press release that he sent to two friends with no intention of it being released publicly.

He also called on First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to investigate the source of the leak.
