Police are following "a number of new leads" after returning to the scene of a sexual assault a week on from the attack.

A 19-year-old woman was forced into a field and sexually assaulted as she walked along Newmills Road in the Balerno area of Edinburgh early last Thursday.

A man approached the teenager at about 12.30am and threatened her before taking her into a field and subjecting her to a serious sexual assault.

Police are searching for a slim white man about 6ft tall who wore a grey hooded top and dark jeans. He may speak with an Edinburgh or English accent.

Officers returned to the area last night to speak to car and bus drivers in the area, and said "several" new witnesses came forward.

Detective Inspector Grant Johnston said; "We would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance in identifying a number of new leads and for the witnesses who have come forward with information.

"We also have a significant piece of evidence to help with our investigation and we will continue to pursue that and all other lines of inquiry until we have identified the suspect.

"We are still asking for anyone who has information to come forward.. Even a minor detail can prove to be absolutely crucial, so I would urge anyone who recognises the description of the suspect or who was in the area at the time and has information to get in touch."
