The long-running lunchtime chamber music concert series at the Merchants House at Glasgow’s George Square restarts this week with a move to Wednesdays. The change means that recitals in the city are now spread throughout the week, with city audiences now catered for at Glasgow University and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as well as the Merchant’s House on most days of the week during term time.
Westbourne Wednesdays begin at 1pm this week with pianist James Willshire playing Mussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition in a rare performance of the original version of the much-loved work. Future concerts feature tenor Julian Tovey, violin and accordian duo Adlibtum, the Edinburgh Quartet, and High Heels And Horse Hair (violinist Alice Rickards and cellist Sonia Cromarty) with a new commission from Judith Weir.

Irish singer, songwriter and social activist Tommy Sands interrupts his forthcoming Scottish tour to take part in a major tribute to the late Pete Seeger in the National Concert Hall in Dublin on September 20. Sands, who was a close friend of Seeger’s and who co-wrote the peace movement anthem The Music Of Healing with the American folk music icon, plays The Tin Hut, Gartly, Aberdeenshire on September 12, Stirling Folk Club (14) and Vineburgh Community Centre, Irvine (16), then returns from Dublin to appear at Glenfarg Hotel (21) and Edinburgh Folk Club (23).
