Joyous Material Failure

(Save As Collective)

Lo-fi quirkmeister Jonnie Common and his real-life brother Jamie Scott (of Conquering Animal Sound) have travelled so far around the nerd spectrum, they've stumbled into the realm of cool. Their first collaboration, Joyous Material Failure, pits bubbling acidic electro against part-sung, part-rapped tunes that are fun in a knockabout, ramshackle manner but never quite corral their ideas into something substantial enough to reach beyond a niche indie market. With a 25-minute running time, this release (available as Bandcamp download or limited edition pizza box-packaged CD) is neither long EP nor short LP but a succession of collaborative skits that, at times, have the banter value of a homemade sitcom made into music. Milky-white bedroom hip-hop merges with daft pop-culture ruminations ("My hands are lethal weapons/but by that I mean that one is Danny Glover." "And the other?" "Mel Gibson."), saving the best for last as Salty pushes the nostalgia buttons with a whooshing electro solo that sounds like a sugar rush in a games arcade.
