In the politically correct world of modern international rugby coaching where it generally seems to be considered unacceptable to say anything the least bit disrespectful about potential upcoming opponents, there was something refreshing about Warren Gatland’s effective acknowledgement that his team would rather face a Scotland team they have not lost to on his eight year watch than a resurgent South Africa in the next round.

“We aren’t having to desperately win the game to reach the quarter-finals, but win this group and potentially the route through to the quarters, semis and finals is easier than the other side,” he pointed out, ahead of today’s meeting with Australia.

“We want to win to give us potentially a second-seed team in the quarter-final.”
