POLICE are investigating a "completely unprovoked" attack on a postman in Dumfries.

The postman was delivering mail at a block of flats in Syme Road in Dumfries at around 10.30am on Friday October 9 when he was assaulted by a man.

The assailant is described as wearing a light blue coloured hooded to with the hood up. He fled the scene after the assault.

Constable Lyndsey Nicholson of Police Scotland at Dumfries said: "This appears to be a completely unprovoked attack on a postman going about his deliveries. As a result of this assault the postman received bruising to his face and a black eye.

"Anyone who was in the Syme Road area around this time is asked to call us at Dumfries on 101 if they can help identify this man."

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said: “We can confirm that a postman was assaulted whilst delivering mail in Syme Road, Dumfries on Friday October 9. 

"Fortunately he was not seriously injured but sustained bruising to his face and was taken to hospital as a precaution, he has subsequently returned to work.

“We are working with Police Scotland on this matter and urge any customers with information to contact the local police.”
