The family of 10-year-old Brooke Bagley, who died after being hit by a car while out on her bike on Hallowe'en, have spoken of their "bright and intelligent young girl".

Brooke was involved in a collision with a car in West Main Street, West Calder, on Saturday.

She was taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children for treatment, but died on Monday.

The girl was cycling on the A71 at around 6.10pm when she was struck by a black Nissan Micra.

Police Scotland has released a statement on behalf of Brooke’s family.

The family said: “Brooke was a bright and intelligent young girl who was full of life, with a large circle of friends.

"She will be sadly missed by us her family, her friends and all who knew her.

“We have been left heartbroken and devastated by the loss of Brooke.

"We ask for privacy at this time and the space to allow us to grieve.”

Family and friends posted tributes on social media

Margaret Brannan, her great-aunt, reportedly wrote: "No words can describe how my niece Tracyann is feeling right now.

"Heaven has the most beautiful wee girl I have ever met. RIP my wee Brooke. God is so unfair. I am devastated."

The Headteacher of St Mary's Primary School, Polbeth, where Brooke was a pupil, also paid tribute.

Maria Brown said: "The school is heartbroken at the tragic news that Brooke has died.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this desperately sad time.

"Brooke was a popular Primary 7 pupil who set a good example for all children in the school and loved her role as a Primary 1 Buddy."

She added: "She was talented at writing, photography and art work and was a very good friend to many.

"Brooke will be sadly missed by everyone at St Mary's Primary School and Polbeth Nursery."

Counsellors have been available at the school to speak to pupils and staff.

The school is now to consider how it will remember Brooke.

Lawrence Fitzpatrick, West Lothian councillor for education, said: "On behalf of West Lothian Council I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Brooke's family and friends at this very sad and difficult time."

Police said the death has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.
