RAIL services have been disrupted between Glasgow Central and Neilston after a tree fell onto overhead wires and caught fire.

Police and fire crews were called to the scene, at the rail line between Muirend and Neilston, shortly before noon on Tuesday.

A ScotRail statement read: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Muirend and Neilston, the line is blocked.

"Glasgow Central to Neilston service may be cancelled."

It is understood the tree was blown over by strong winds before touching the high voltage wires and bursting into flames.

In a statement, Network Rail confirmed engineers were at the site carrying out repairs.

It read: "A tree has come down onto overhead line electrification (OLE) cables near Patterton station.

"Specialist teams supported by emergency services are on site to make safe and remove before assessing damage and making repairs."
