DAME Judi Dench has been picked as the ultimate Bond girl by residents of Glasgow beating the likes of Ursula Andress and Honor Blackman.

Over one in four of those surveyed picked Dench, aged 80, who starred as M for 17 years, fending off the likes of Eva Green (14 per cent) who played Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale and Gemma Arteron (10 per cent) who starred in Quantum of Solace.

Current 007 Daniel Craig, was voted the most popular Bond ever with two-fifths (42%) while Scots star Sean Connery came second on 33 per cent and Daniel Craig’s predecessor, Pierce Brosnan received the back of 17 per cent.

Cineworld, who polled nearly 500 people for their survey said Bond’s Skyfall nemesis Raoul Silva and Le Chiffre from Casino Royale shared the 'favourite villain' honours in the Cineworld poll of 3000 customers. They beat the classic silent henchman Jaws who received the support of 13 per cent.

Film critic James King, said of the findings: “As a film critic and cinema lover, it’s always fun to speculate on who in the history of Bond has been the best Bond girl or leading man.

"It’s quite a surprise to see Dame Judi Dench come out top ahead of the younger, more stereotypical Bond girls – but it just goes to show what a national treasure she is."

James Bond film Spectre was predictably top of the North American box office in its first weekend of release.

The 24th film in the spy franchise, which sees Daniel Craig reprise his role as 007, earned $73 million between Friday and Sunday, according to early estimates.

But the film failed to beat the performance of the last Bond movie Skyfall, which took $88.4 million in 2012.
