Deyn, who made her name as a model, plays the main role of heroine Chris Guthrie.

Ms Deyn said that the lead character of Chris had "taught me so much about how to really be a woman."

She added: "About being strong, not being hard but being strong. Everyone should read this book.

"I was such a fan of terrance and such a fan of Chris but I never thought I would end up in the film.  When I read the script I just wept all the way through."

Scottish actor Kevin Guthrie said of the film, based on the classic novel by Lewis Grassic Gibbon: "Making this film has been an incredible journey, both emotionally and geographically."

Davies said it was "lovely" to finally show the movie in Scotland.

"I have loved it ever since I first saw the BBC adaptation in 1971. I was only 18 but I waited every week to see it."
