A young boy has been knocked down near a primary school in Glasgow.

The nine-year-old primary pupil was hit by a car outside Haghill School Campus this morning.

Eyewitnesses told how the boy was knocked down in Cumbernauld Road at 8.30am as children arrived for the start of classes.

Paramedics treated the child at the scene before he was rushed to hospital.

A large cordon was in place around a pedestrian crossing in Cumbernauld Road and road traffic officers could be seen carrying out investigations.

Police said the boy was hit by a car and taken to the children's accident and emergency unit at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Education bosses confirmed he is a pupil at Haghill Park Primary School and staff were helping police with the investigation.

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: "Unfortunately a pupil was involved in a road traffic incident outside the school this morning.

"The school is helping the police with their inquiries."

Cumbernauld Road was closed between Edinburgh Road and Alexandra Parade following the incident.

Road users were warned to expect delays and advised to avoid the area if possible.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Around 8.30am we received a report of a child being struck by a car on Cumbernauld Road near to Aberfeldy Street, in Glasgow."

Meanwhile, investigations are continuing into a crash on the South Side of Glasgow this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Bridge Street, at the corner of Norfolk Street, at around 7.30am.

The road was partially blocked, causing delays for commuters heading into Glasgow city centre.

There were not thought to be any serious injuries.
