A LAWYER dubbed the 'Duke of Princes Street' after living in a private members' club on the famous Edinburgh thoroughfare for nearly 60 years left a £26 million fortune in his will.

Ivor Guild lived at the New Club, where Sir Sean Connery stays when he is in Edinburgh, for 57 years after being offered a room there by the management.

A well-known figure to Edinburgh residents, he could be seen walking on Princes Street most days with a hat and raincoat regardless of the weather.

Guild died aged 90 in January after suffering a stroke at a restaurant in Berlin while on a cultural tour of the German city.

The Dundee-born bachelor owned barely any possessions, did not drive a car and rarely spent money on new clothes.

However, his recently published will reveals that he had an estate worth £26,020,030 at the time of his death.

After leaving small gifts of £3,000 each to his 11 godchildren, he instructed that the remainder of his wealth should be split between a niece and two nephews who live overseas.

It is thought Guild had inherited money from his father Colonel Arthur Guild, a successful stockbroker and a significant figure in the jute industry of Dundee.

He also had a long career as a solicitor with Edinburgh firm Shepherd and Wedderburn and invested in a large stocks and shares portfolio.
