Britain has "got its mojo back" and stands alongside the United States in the fight to "reassert Western values", George Osborne has said.
Speaking in the US, the Chancellor said it was a "source of real pride" for him that MPs had overwhelmingly backed air strikes in Syria against Islamic State.
Mr Osborne said Britain, in partnership with the US, was taking the fight to IS by cutting off financing and tackling extremist ideology.

He told the Council on Foreign Relations think tank: "Britain has got its mojo back and we are going to be with you as we reassert Western values, confident that our best days lie ahead."
The Commons defeat Prime Minister David Cameron suffered over action in Syria against Bashar Assad's brutal regime in 2013 was a "striking moment", Mr Osborne said.
"The House of Commons did not agree with the proposition that David Cameron and myself and my colleagues in the Conservative leadership put forward and it was quite a striking moment," he told the think tank.
"It was a moment when Britain was unable to follow the lead asked of it by our Prime Minister and the government."
He added: "It is for me a source of real pride that actually a couple of years later the House of Commons has voted by a big majority to take part in the action already being directed against this terrorist organisation Isis or Daesh in Syria."
Right or wrong? MSPs debate the Syria question
Mr Osborne said British air strikes were not the answer alone but insisted they would help degrade the jihadi organisation.
Mr Osborne suggested a long term political settlement in Syria was not dependent on the entire Assad regime being ousted.
He said: "It's difficult to see how Syria can have any long term future with Assad there as president, many people would never return to that country if that were the case.
"But, that doesn't mean the entire Syrian regime has to go."
Mr Osborne said the price of failing to take military action in Syria earlier is "very apparent to people".
"I think in Britain we are ready to play a bigger role," he told the event in New York.

"Britain has "got its mojo back" ... George Osborne has said."
Oh dear God, he didn't say that did he? I was undecided before the vote, was coming to the idea that maybe it was right, but that is truly frightening.
The thought that Austin Powers could ever become PM of the UK is a reason to emigrate, and fast.

To be honest Peter, I don't think the similarity with Austin Powers ends there?
Dr Evil gives an excellent display of being as economically illiterate as Osborne when he pronounces "Why make Trillions, when we could make.....Billions?".

Essential reading for anyone in any doubt about the bombings being an exercise in vaingloriously banging the UK drum.
I'd like to invite anyone in favour of the bombing campaign to justify Osborne's remarks.

So this ''Mojo '' thing , are these the deadly accurate bombs that Cameron was boasting about which don't kill innocents ?

I wasn't referring to his height but then I'm sure you knew that. I don't know what Alex Salmond has got to do with Osborne making fatuous comments about the deaths of innocent Syrians.
If you cannot defend Osborne's crass comment then attacking another politician doesn't really cover up your failure. Especially if the politician you have attacked doesn't have blood on his hands.

What a poor post. What has this to do with Alex Salmond? Unfortunately, a typical response of the obsessive pro and anti-SNP trolls. This used to be an interesting site with intelligent and informed opinions. Now this is rarely the case.

How tall is he going to feel when it finally dawns on him and the rest of his bomb-happy pals that he will have helped destroy Isis only to have created a power vacuum. The only power that can fill that vacuum is Assad, with the military might of Russia and Iran behind him.
Oh, and please don't insult my intelligence about the '70,000' moderates forming some kind of quasi-autonomous country within a country. You would have more luck herding cats.
The electorate will make them pay the price, when they realise they've been duped again by yet another Government which has led us into yet another disastrous war.

There can be only one reason Cameron keeps Osborne at his side and that's to make himself look "good" in comparison. Osborne is running interference for Cameron.
Edit: whether he know it or not, or is just Cameron's dupe.

Just when you thought the Tories couldn't get any more sickeningly crass, that swivel-eyed loon Osborne comes out with this....This is *exactly* why the UK cleaves to maintaining Trident, no matter the cost - so that post-imperial inadequates like Osborne feel they have something to waggle on the world stage.

If you want pathetic, probably best to read Salmond's insights on the Siol nan Gaidheal web site concerning the war in the old Yugoslavia.

I suppose you're happy with Osborne's puerile comment? Gives you goose bumps does it?
It's time to get your Union flag out, Peter, and give it a wave.

Peter your stuck in your head fighting a war from 20 years ago and confusing Bosnia with Kosovo into the bargain. Now fast forward 3 Wars or more and stay on topic son. Syria, Daesh, Syrian Army, Russians, Turks, Kurds, Turcomen, Iranians, Iraqis, a host of smaller groups and of course the USA and France... add 2 UK planes and Osborne - and its mojo time. But hey they probably have Bosnian volunteer fighters helping Daesh !

Apparently Salmond hasn't found his mojo yet.
What was it the genius Salmond said about NATO intervention to prevent ethnic cleansing in the Bosnian war?
"Unpardonable folly"?
Try telling that to a Bosnian whose life was saved by NATO.
And there are actually quite a few of them in Scotland by the way.

This isn't about Salmond being arguably wrong back then. It's about Osborne being a complete jackass now.

More distortions from you: Mr Salmond wasn't against military action in Bosnia: he was against bombing civilian targets in Serbia, notably Belgrade. I doubt you will find many Serbians civilians disagreeing with him - or do they not count?

And Milosevic was deposed by a democratic election, not be force of arms. I was in the Balkans when the bombing started, it was a disgraceful episode that included bombing school, hospitals, the TV offices, and the Chinese embassy among other "military" targets.
Just as Alex Salmond predicted, it did not "break" the people, they became MORE entrenched and antagonistic towards the "west". Something still alive in some groups today.
UK politicians never seem to learn.

What about Osbourne?
What about Osbourne?
As opposed to the Millions of Afghan lives ruined (especially women) when the UK decided to aid and install the fundamentalist Taliban in power in Afghanistan over the secular Soviet aligned Democratic Republic of Afghanistan in the 1980's.
Remember when during her time as Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher openly called a terrorist a "true friend", invited a terrorist into her home for tea, and personally lobbied against a terrorist's prosecution for war crimes.
Thatcher's support for Chile's former torturer-in-chief General Pinochet is no secret; it was something she was proud of. Despite her assertion that “The United States and Britain have together been the greatest alliance in defence of liberty and justice,” Thatcher refused to back down in her support of a man who overthrew a democratically elected government. This was a man who initiated the notorious Caravan of Death, the army unit that travelled the country by helicopter, murdering and torturing the General's opponents.
Pinochet's rule was inhumane and brutal, but was it terrorism? In the words of a soldier in Chile's Talca Regiment at the time of the abuses: "It seems to me that one of the reasons for the [Caravan of Death] mission was to set a drastic precedent in order to terrorise the presumed willingness of the Chilean people to fight back. But without any doubt, it was also intended to instill fear and terror among the commanders. To prevent any military personnel, down to lowest ranking officers, from taking a false step: this could happen to you!"
The shameful whitewashing of the regime by Thatcher's government only increased when Pinochet was arrested on war crimes charges in London in 1998. Robin Harris, a former member of Thatcher's Policy Unit, claimed in 2006 that she had nothing to be ashamed of. In a comment piece for The Telegraph, he wrote that “the legal case against him was weak and the motivation of those involved suspect” and “the loss of life, most of which occurred in the first months when a civil war raged, was less than in other similar situations”. He also pointed out that “other statistics of Pinochet's record are worth mentioning. Inflation [went] down from 600 per cent to 6 per cent [...] living standards more than doubled”.
Well he might have brutally tortured and murdered thousands of people, but hey he had a great grip on economics!
More recently of course the UK's actions resulted in the deaths of over a million of Iraqi civilians and the entire Middle East destabilised by the UK's invasion of Iraq, all based on a lie of non-existent weapons of mass destruction.
Ah now we have the success story of Libya where a dictator was overthrown and the country transformed into a peaceful democracy by UK bombing.......Oh right it's now a failed state where living standards have collapsed and there is perpetual civil war, not only that but in the chaos ISIS has established a foothold.

But this has got nothing to do with Salmond and nothing to do with Bosnia. What is it with the Unionists and your unhealthy fixation with Salmond? The referendum is over, Salmond is no longer the leader and sits in the back benches in WM, making first class speeches, like the one against the war in Syria. You know, the speech the MSM didn't wet themselves over because he wasn't advocating adding more civilian deaths to an ever increasing list.
You have this black-hearted, puerile halfwit Osborne, a study in inhumanity, and you think Salmond is the problem. Dearie me, tell me, is there any action of cruelty and mean-spiritedness that this government will perform where you might actually offer some sort of criticism? Probably not and it shows you for what you are.

I don't need to move Andy. I just need to sit back and watch the bullingdon boys completely alienate the few people left in Scotland who support the putrid mess at Westminster.
Not only did the red and blue Tory's cheer and applaud the potential bombingand murder of innocent children, but this alleged coke head above thinks it is a penile implant for the impotent British empire.
sick and disgusting and there you are defending him again.

Let us remember Salmond, Kosovo and Srebrenica.
He said that NATO should negotiate with barbaric Serbian nationalists.
The Bosnian men were driven by bus to a large field where they were shot and buried, and the testimony of survivors reflects that of survivors of Einsatzgruppe mass executions. While UN troops stood around and did nothing.
And this had the unwavering support of the Serbian population-read John Simpson's account-it is chilling.
Salmond said it was wrong to stop them by all means necessary.
I think some of the Nationalists on here are letting their hatred for all things UK cloud their judgement, as indeed Salmond clearly did re Yugoslavia.

I would have thought a decent Labour supporter would have been attacking Osbornes horrendous comment, not someone who also agrees with your position on the air strikes?
Oh, sorry my mistake, yesterday you were on deflecting for a BNP/Tory troll aswell. SNP baaaad is one thing, but being the Tories little helper is exactly the reason why Labour may actually get beaten for second place by the Tories next May. Hey why bother with Red Tories when you can get the real thing, right?

It is perfectly legitimate to discuss Salmond's opposition to the bombing of Serbia in the context of the current decision by the UK parliament, which Osborne is rearticulating in a rather crass way, since Salmond is once again opposing the action.
It is still moot whether the retreat of Serbian troops from Kosovo was due to the effectiveness of bombing military targets or due to the fear and alarm caused by bombing civilian infrastructure in Belgrade.
The fact is that about 500 civilians were killed by NATO bombs in Serbia during the whole campaign. The Serbs then retreated.
The Serbs massacred more than 8000 Bosnians in and around Srebrenica in July, 1995.
I think that history will judge that NATO was right and that Salmond was wrong.

Odd that history is still out on that one after 20 years. The issues around Kosovo have developed further, add the displaced Serbs to the 100s killed. The grief of Srebrenica has not lessened. And Nato became an attacking club without a UN mandate. So its going to be a very long time before history judges who was right and who was wrong. Whereas this adventure in Syria is just plainly insane.

Nonsense.
Nonsense.
Quote from John Pilger "Freedom next time". "During Nato's assault on Serbia in 1999, al-Queda militants joined up with and fought alongside the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), which was also funded and armed by the United States - and al-Queda. The Clinton administration's quarry then was Slobodan Milosevec and its goal the final break-up of multi-ethnic, 'socialist' Yugoslavia. This was achieved by enduring bedfellows American foreign policy (through bombinb) and 'Islamic terrorism'. Such an important irony, which helped explain the rise of the jihadis, eluded the media reporting on Kosovo's 'liberation'".
You should read more of Pilger and Fisk.
Relating to the George Osborne comment: If the UK has 'it's Mojo back' - then surely it's because, as with Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere - the bombing is nothing to do with Assad and Syria - it's the concern about global financial difficulties for the usual faceless global-game-players whose strategy is again refloat the economy (their interests only) by yet again using that old chestnut - the need for a 'war on terror'. The markets clearly show the results within minutes of the Westminter 'let's go bomb' vote result.
What Osborne means by the UK 'has got it's Mojo back' - he ought to have been wearing short trousers, untied trainers and a baseball cap at the time - is that the global plutocracy once again has 'official' sanction to continue the US imperial plan of control, to which, not the UK, but the faceless investors drive on regardless. The UK and ordinary people of the UK are metaphorical collateral damage in terms of being nothing more than an inconvenience outwith the surface value of voting fodder to give the wealthy Osborne's and Cameron's of this world carte blanche to go ahead with their long-term strategies. And there's that USA, French, UK pipeline venture to secure with the need to undermine Russia's gas supply successes to Europe et al.
Don't you find it at all odd that David Cameron has not found it necessary to address the UK (to mimic Obama's address) to let the ordinary UK public know what measures he has put in place to protect the UK from the 'they're coming to get us' warnings by Tony Blair et al? But instead, there is Osborne using street language and performing like a teenage groupie talking about the UK's 'mojo'? And why don't you ask Cameron, Hollande and Obama - why do Daesh in Europe and the USA (post 9/11) always seem to strike at ordinary people in every-day places - rather than heading for the big prizes - banks, banks, banks? Is it because London'sUK's Mojo is really the housing of every tin pot dictator, terrorist and Western warmongerer's slush funds? But oh look - there's Scotland - which is geographically useful for the next inside job.

The bombing of Serbian militias and troops in Kosovo did not in itself end the genocide. Genocide took place after the bombing. Fact. Indeed, enthnic Albanians massacred ethnic Serbs who had lived in Kosovo for generations (Kosovo had always been deemed a part of Serbia, with a minority Albanian population) as well as Serbs killing ethnic Albanians, who had also lived there for generations. The fear of Western military entering the fray to break the deadlock, as well as the bombing of Belgrade, which killed civilian Serbs, forced the retreat. The Serbs knew that if they persisted, Serbia itself would come under prolonged attack and sanctions would cripple their economy. Again, the toothlessness of the UN, its slow response and its lack of purpose was to blame to a great extent for allowing the war in the first place. Everyone with a brain knew that Serbia, and, probably, Croatia, would start to grab territory when the withdrawal of Slovenia signalled the disintegration of Yugoslavia. What may have been less obvious to start with, was the ethnic cleansing that occurred, but, even there, the history of the region should have set off warning bells. Heavens, people at Whitehall, in the White House and at the UN are paid good salaries to work out the probabilities of these things, given all the available information at the time.
Bombing alone will not solve the Syrian question either because, if anything, it is even more complicated than Bosnia ever was, and because air strikes alone never do. Daesh needs to be cut off from its sources of funding and weaponry, and more to the point, those sources need to be revealed, which, of course, they won't be if they are too close to home for Westminster's comfort.

Well, it is despised in many places in the world, because of people like him.

Weeks behind Russia in taking the initiative but has the brass neck to crow about it
Since Russia is doing the donkey work, with greater precision than we are if recent reports are accurate, the countries of the West should be doing what's needed and sanctioning dangerous states such as Turkey (and maybe Pakistan as a radical jihadist Afghanistan is in its interests in preparation for another war with India) but they do not have the guts for such action as it would be offensive to our 'allies'
For the record, I was against the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan but once you kick over a wasps nest you need to call in the fumigators or suffer the consequences

When you look closer into Bilderberger George ,his current remarks
are designed for his USA audience.
I've never rated him,his first task is always to blow his trumpet but,
the music that comes out is flat everytime.
He has missed every financial target he set himself, his austerity
planning pot is full of holes,he was given a window of opportunity
by the Office of Budget Responsibility of some £28billion spread over the next 5 years,so you would expect him to pay down some of the Uk debt
instead he's spent it and borrowed another £18 billion, something
really out of sink in this man's head, you cannot square what he's done
with austerity planning.Bonkers wants the top job and he is Bombing
his way forward.Idiot Chancellor out of his box.
Now Tory ideology Unionist voters go stick your heads in a bucket
your chancellor is a big skinny FAKE.

I'm not too sure what the exact definition of "having your Mojo back" is? But, I kinda suspect it doesn't mean being America's obedient pet poodle?

What a sick world we live in when our so-called leaders can treat war as a game for their egos.

There was a great debate in the HoC, followed by a democratic vote, and the motion was carried. We attack IS. No ones asking anyone to agree with it, your entitled to your opinion. However, you have to accept that the UK voted to attack IS, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies.
That's democracy. However, we know how the nats feel about democratic decisions, don't we ? They only accept the ones that suit them.

Your idea of democracy doesn't seem to apply to Britnats like you who constantly whinge at just about ever decision made by the Scottish Government following democratic votes in Holyrood.
Sheer hypocricy, Britnat style.

Do you accept the settled will of the Scottish people ?

Incredible how you manage to combine an article about a speech by Osborne with a dig at the SNP. Very childish; and irrelevant.

No not really. It is relevant. The nats are on here all of the time banging on about democracy, yet they refuse to accept the democratic decision by the Scottish electorate not to leave the UK. We are constantly reminded of how it was a fix etc, and they demand and expect another referendum.
So I think it is very relevant, and the nats very hypocritical.

Yes, and democracy has moved on, James. Fifty-six SNP MPs have at the very least put a large question mark over your precious No vote. Democracy is nothing if not flexible and continuous; it does not stand still for hundreds of years on one decision, now does it? If the Union of 1707 had been democratic, we would have been out of the Union long since. It is precisely because it was thoroughly undemocratic that it has set like cement and that persistently unconstitutional behaviour by a unpopular (in Scotland) Tory government is not even questioned by those who should know better.

I posted this comment in the Toadygraph today, with a link back here as, oddly enough, this speech went unreported there, as far as I can see, and Ruth's own deserve better...
Protecting people from disaster is among the first duties of government...but what if the government is itself a national tragedy ?....
....That this government is not just unequal to performing the first duty of any government, the defence of the realm, what with being simply tyros, is bad enough
But worse, that it is of such grotesque, bare faced impropriety and vitiated fibre is now plain for all the world to behold :
To the original black American blues artists, a Mojo was an important part of hodooo culture, an actual artifact able to impart to the possessor magical powers
But as misappropriated by later pop-song culture ,the phrase "got my Mojo working" refers to a claim of restored sexual potency and arousal
Goodness only knows in which sense our noble Chancellor and principal pretender to the Toady throne used that phrase to describe his feelings on the successful launching his new Middle Eastern war, albeit against a different faction this time around of that nightmare civil war.
Perhaps neither, but some imaginary signification of his own, who knows , his plain ignorance ,incompetence and overweening vanity are all manifest in that speech , all too horribly well.
The man is an abomination , that is proven by his own words, just as surely as his claim we are all perverted warmongers ought to be his political epitaph.

Another speech of Churchillian quality from Qsborne . Way to go man !
In another one of his blatant attempts to become Prime Minister, he now considers himself to be Foreign Secretary and Chief of Defence as well as Chancellor. Is he paying for this trip ? Does he fancy a double act on stage with Donald Trump ? Will Osbo find his Mojo in time to beat Bojo to no.10 ?

When you read some of things they say it makes you think Tories aren't normal people. There's something missing in the brain region that would normally kick in before the mouth opened and spilled the contents of their head onto the front pages.

The "mojo" comment says it all... about Osborne and the Tory agenda.
Strangely not offered as a key justification for attacking Syria.

Britain has got it's mojo back as we reassert western values, confident that our best days lie ahead.
This must be the daftest undiplomatic statement uttered in modern times by any British government minister ever, within the context of an action in defence of the U.K.

The UK is right use airstrikes. I support the Conservative government to look after
the interest of British people. The Key country is Russia. Russia has made big
difference in helping the Syria army and government in supporting airstrikes.
Russia will sort out this problem with support Syria army and government. But this war in middle east will take five year to win this Syria war. I support Russia and
the British government in their war aims sorting out this problem. The British
government will support France and I support UK airstrikes in Syria.

Osborne's bombast cannot disguise the fact that Britain just got played like a two bob flute. We now know that America merely has to pander to the French and stoke old colonial rivalries, and the Southern British will eagerly bend to their master's will. Quite pathetic and laughable if it weren't so serious.

Firstly, my understanding was that Osborne's remarks were made in the US to a US audience who welcomed our support alongside France and 64 other countries in the common fight against Daesh and was not intended for those who live in the wee Scottish bubble - a massive difference.
Secondly, whether the SNP supporters like it or not under Osborne's guidance the UK is again forecast to have the fastest growth of all the major Western economies albeit Scotland is now seriously lagging the rest of the U.K. - for reasons that are blindingly obvious.
I would have Osborne over the stuttering, stammering, clueless Hosie any day who has presented Scotland with the worst fiscal deficit to GDP out of all the 34 OECD countries - no wonder the SNP won't push for another referendum.
