THE new finance director of Prestwick Airport has stepped down weeks after taking on the position.

In September this year it was announced that chartered accountant Brian Sutherland would take on the role, beginning on Monday 7 December.

However the airport has now announced that he has now resigned from the post due to "personal circumstances".

The new role was part of an overall management shake-up at the tax-payer owned base, after it was saved from closure when the Scottish Government bought it for £1 in 2013.

The new appointment came on the back of the announcement in August that chief executive Iain Cochrane and chief commercial officer Graeme Sweenie were stepping down as part of an effort to revive the airport's fortunes.

Mr Sutherland, who was born and raised in Ayrshire, had joined the airport from international packaging business, Multi Packaging Solutions, where he was finance and commercial director.

He had previously held senior positions at Warburtons, ASDA Stores Ltd and Chivas Glenlivet and had taken over from previous chief financial officer, Grant McLeod.

The airport's Interim Chief Executive, Richard Jenner, said:"We have accepted Brian’s resignation with immediate effect.

"It is a priority for us to have the right person in this pivotal post. Brian was an excellent candidate, selected from a strong field, and it is unfortunate that circumstances have changed.

"This was undoubtedly an extremely hard decision for Brian and we sincerely wish him well for the future.

"We are moving through a period of positive change, and we will continue to drive this process forward as we look to build the strongest possible leadership team for the airport."

He added: "We are confident we will have a new Finance Director in place in the coming months."
