A COUNTRY house saved for the nation by Prince Charles is haunted by a ghost with an incontinence problem, according to staff.

The spectre, which sports a pungent smell, is said to stalk visitors to Dumfries House, near Cumnock, East Ayrshire.

The 18th-century property was bought by a consortium led by Prince Charles in 2007, and is now a visitor attraction.

Charlotte Rostek, head curator of the house, said she and tour groups had been followed by the presence.

She said: “There used to be an odour appearing out of nowhere – and usually in very inconvenient situations when you were leading a private tour.

“Suddenly people would get a bit shifty and look around them, and there was this very, very unpleasant smell.”

Ms Rostek said she thought the stinky spook had vanished following a restoration project.

Colleague Alex MacDonald said a woman on a tour had seen a ghostly apparition appear through the door of a grand bedroom in which two aristocratic family members had died.
