MEMBERS of a women's rugby team escaped serious injuries after their bus was involved in a crash as they returned from a match in Dumfries.

The Hillhead Jordanhill ladies team's bus was caught up in the smash at 8.30pm on Sunday night the outskirts of Dumfries between Parkgate and St Anns. 

The team were returning from a match in the Sarah Beanie Cup at Dumfries High School against Stewartry.

Hillhead, known affectionately as the Hilljills, won the game by 100-0. They are based in Glasgow's West End.

Police said that officers attended at the scene of the accident on the A701, and that no injuries had been reported. 

The road was shut in both directions. The team bus was heading north towards the M74 when the incident happened. 

A spokesman for Police Scotland said that officers had been sent to the scene.

Transport Scotland updated their website to warn drivers to find alternate routes. 

The team were taken back to Dumfries Police Station while alternative transport was arranged, and were able to coninue their journey shaken but unhurt.

Matt Horler, Head of Media, at Scottish Rugby said: "We are aware of the incident and it appears as though no one has been seriously injured.

"It is too early to speculate on what caused the crash".

The team was started in 1995 by ex-Glasgow University player Liz Stewart. 

They won the Scottish Premier League for the first time in 2010/11 and again in 2013/14, and a league and cup double 2012/2013, winning the Cup Final at Murrayfield with a try in the last minute against RHC cougars.
