AN ambitious £1billion plan to transform one of Scotland's oldest universities has taken a step forward.

The new campus at the University of Glasgow on the site of the former Western Infirmary will create thousands of jobs.

Glasgow University is to spend the money over the next decade as it upgrades its West End site and develops the plot.

And today it was revealed university bosses will receive the keys to the former Western site, bounded by Dumbarton Road, Church Street and University Place, in April.

Anton Muscatelli, principal of the university, hopes the facility will make Glasgow one of the top universities in the world.

He said: "In the past four years alone we have grown by about 25% but physically we haven't expanded.

"Having the chance to purchase land just next door to us represents a huge opportunity for the university and the city of Glasgow."

The new plans include interactive technological hubs and a new civic square.

The 10 year plan also includes proposals to create a museum quarter which would rival London.

Mr Muscatelli said: "The university will be plugged into a vibrant cultural quarter that will stretch all the way to the Hydro arena."

In total the project is expected to create more than 2500 jobs.
