An SNP MP has called for the Bank of England to renamed to include Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

George Kerevan MP said that the name should be changed to reflect the bank's status as a UK-wide institution.

He told the Sunday Post: "The Bank of England is a UK-wide institution with UK-wide concerns and its name, governance and practices must reflect this."

The move was described as 'petty' and 'absurd' by Murdo Fraser, the Scottish Conservative's finance spokesman.

The bank was founded by Scot William Paterson in 1694.
