A climber was carried in a near blizzard two miles by rescuers after falling 260 feet on a Scottish mountain.

The man, in his 40s, escaped with only a broken ankle after he fell from a point on Coire an t-sneachda just below an area known as Aladdin’s Mirror.

More than 20 members of Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team and mountain rescuers from RAF Leeming in Yorkshire training in the area were deployed to help locate the man.

He was still attached on the technical ice climb, which he was undertaking with another man.

A Coastguard rescue helicopter airlifted rescuers and equipment into the area, but had to land further away each time.

Willie Anderson, leader of Cairngorm MRT, said:”It was snowing heavily, but the guys did a great job.

“The climbers were still attached to the ice climb. We had to extricate them. We lowered them down and the weather was getting worse and worse all the time.

"Team members then took it in turns to stretcher the injured man over about two miles to a car park where an ambulance was waiting. He is very lucky.”
