Gordon Brown's former spin doctor Charlie Whelan has become a community councillor in the Highlands.

Mr Whelan has agreed to join Dulnain Bridge Community Council after it issued a plea for more members.

Mr Whelan said he was looking forward to the challenges his new post will bring.

The vilage in Speyside, which has been his home for 15 years, has around 500 residents.

Mr Whelan told The Scotsman: "I am quite happy to serve the local community.

"I didn't stand because I am bringing revolutionary politics to Dulnain Bridge.

"They will probably talk more sense in the community council than they do at Westminster.

"By and large everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet, which is about protecting the local community."

Mr Whelan currently writes a column for the Strathspey Herald
