Plans for a lasting memorial to slain shopkeeper Asad Shah have been put on hold.

The 40-year-old was killed outside his store in Shawlands, Glasgow, on March 24.

Two vigils held in the hours after Mr Shah’s death attracted upwards of 600 people and more than £100,000 was donated to his devastated family on a crowdfunding website.

The clamour for a permanent memorial began in the following days and the idea was backed by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, MP Stewart McDonald and local councillors.

Ms Sturgeon, who is the local MSP, said: “I think this is a lovely idea and it has my full support.

“It's clear how much affection and respect local people had for Mr Shah and it would be a fitting tribute to the impact he had on so many lives.”

A member of the family - who asked not to be identified on the advice of police – told the Herald and Evening Times a memorial in Shawlands would be a “nice gesture”.

Glasgow City Council said officials “would be happy to assist” and Councillor Norman MacLeod arranged a meeting on April 7.

However, it is understood the group is yet to meet the family to discuss what form it will take.

Councillor MacLeod said: “I had a very constructive meeting with some constituents last week. The position is that whilst they have a few ideas they are most anxious not to proceed until the family of Mr Shah have had a chance to indicate their approval or otherwise.

“We have agreed that I will find out, via Mr Shah’s mosque, when the family might be able to discuss the matter.

“We are very keen not to add to any distress they have suffered therefore we will not be taking it forward until we have had a chance to talk it through with the family.”

A council spokeswoman added: “Officers met with residents and local representatives last week and will continue to offer any assistance required.”

The alleged killer of Mr Shah declared through his lawyer last week that the shopkeeper had “disrespected” the Prophet Muhammad.

Accused Tanveer Ahmed, in a highly unusual statement, added: “If I had not done this others would.”
