The first direct flights from Scotland to Jamaica are to start next summer.

Run by Thomson and First Choice, the flights from Glasgow to Montego Bay will operate from three weeks from June 22 2017.

Along with summer flights to Cape Verde, the airline said the flights will better-connect Scotland to "some of the most exciting destinations" in the world.

The Jamaica flights will serve popular resorts including Lucea, Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios and Trelawny.

Paul White, business development manager at Glasgow Airport, said: "We're very excited that Thomson will be launching Scotland's first direct flight to Jamaica from Glasgow Airport next summer.

"Jamaica is the perfect Caribbean retreat, boasting white sands, delicious food and beautiful natural surroundings including waterfalls, mountains and banana plantations.

"Cape Verde is also a fantastic sun destination and we are confident that both of these announcements will generate a great deal of interest amongst our customers."

The flights to Jamaica will run between June 22 and July 13 next year while the route to Sal, Cape Verde, will start this winter and continue in summer 2017.

Karen Switzer, director of aviation planning for Thomson and First Choice, said: "Adding more capacity from Glasgow Airport with the introduction of a new route to Sal, Cape Verde, and a seasonal route to Jamaica demonstrates our commitment to the airport and the local area."

Meanwhile, increased services have also been announced from Inverness Airport with flights to Majorca added from summer 2017.

The Thomson First Choice route will operate for six weeks from June 16.

The announcement continues the expansion of services from Inverness with increased daily flights to London and Amsterdam starting next month.

Graeme Bell, general manager of Inverness Airport, said: "Majorca is a fantastic addition to our holiday route network and the launch of these new flights means that holidaymakers looking to enjoy a summer break can now start their journey at Inverness Airport."

Ms Switzer said: "The addition of the route will give customers in the Highlands more flexibility when deciding on their 2017 summer holiday."
