1 Beltane Fire Festival

Old Town, Edinburgh, April 30

Taking its cue from the ancient Celtic fertility festival, the Beltane Fire Festival is a perfect way to mark the start of summer.

The unique event, which celebrates May Day, tells the story of the death of winter and the birth of summer through the medium of dance, music, fire and giant puppets.

Thousands of revellers and hundreds of performers are expected to gather on Carlton Hill in the Scottish capital for the festival, which includes a procession featuring a cavalcade of characters led by the May Queen and the Green Man, live music and a huge bonfire.

Tickets for the event are £10 and can be bought at the gate.

2 Skye Live

Isle of Skye, April 29-30

Set amongst some of the most stunning scenery Scotland has to offer, this festival brings together an eclectic mix of folk, dance and electronic music, with tricks from Skye’s own stunt rider extraordinaire Danny MacAskill thrown in for good measure.

The two-day event includes headlining sets from folk music icons Capercaillie, electronic duo Simian Mobile Disco, King Creosote and Mercury Music Prize nominee C Duncan.

Foodies will also be able to get their hands on some delicious treats, with chefs including The Three Chimney’s Scott Davies, Kinloch’s Michelin starred Marcello Tully and Michael Smith serving up dishes at the event.

3 The Great British Dog Walk

Pollok Country Park, Glasgow, May 1

Animal lovers will be able to raise money for a good cause while spending some quality time with their pet pooches when the Great British Dog Walk comes to Glasgow on Sunday.

The event is part of a national campaign designed to raise funds for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, with walks organised at National Trust properties across the UK.

Tickets for the event are £10. Pre-register to receive a special gift for you and your dog.

4 Dundead Horror Film Festival

Dundee Contemporary Arts, Dundee, today until May 1

Film buffs will get the chance to indulge their bloodthirsty side when the Dundead Festival returns today for its fifth year.

Featuring screenings of The Hills Have Eyes, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Krull and previews of Evolution and Green Room starring Patrick Stewart, this festival is not for the squeamish. There’s even a quiz for those keen to test their horror genre knowledge.

5 Ed Byrne: Outside, Looking In

Macrobert Arts Centre, Stirling on April 28, Dundee Rep Theatre on April 29-30, and Perth Concert Hall on May 1

The Dublin stand-up and Mock the Week regular will bring his own brand of nerd humour to Scotland this week when his tour heads north.

His show, which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe last year, combines the Irish comic’s anecdotal, observational comedy with a few unexpected surprises.

6 The Art of Miles Davis and John Lennon

Dundas Street Gallery, Edinburgh, until April 30

A treat for art and music aficionados, this exhibition showcases the paintings and drawings of Miles Davis, one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time, and Beatles icon John Lennon.

The event, which coincides with the film premiere of Miles Ahead in Glasgow, features 60 pieces of work by the jazz pioneer, from original sketches to large abstracts, and 35 whimsical drawings and sketches by the Beatles legend.

7 Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival

Combining the great Scottish outdoors with the nation’s favourite tipple, this four-day festival will raise a glass to all things whisky related.

The event, which takes place at distilleries, shops, restaurants, pubs and villages across Speyside, includes special tastings, behind-the-scenes tours, food, music and outdoor activities.

A must for whisky connoisseurs or anyone who's a fan of the Scottish nectar.

8 Molotov Jukebox

King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow today and Electric Circus, Edinburgh, April 29

Game of Thrones fans are in for a treat as Osha, aka Nat Tena or Tonks from Harry Potter, brings her eclectic band of gypsy, ska, pop rockers to Scotland.

The six-piece will play tracks from their genre-defying new album Tropical Gypsy along with some gems from debut Carnival Flower.

9 An Audience with Tim Brooke-Taylor

Gardyne Theatre, Dundee, April 29

The I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue panellist and former Goodie will regale fans with tales from his career in comedy at this special talk in Dundee.

Talking to writer and broadcaster Chris Serle, the beloved comic will discuss his hesitant start in comedy, Cambridge Footlights and what it was like working with Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie.

It’s a night comedy fans won’t want to miss.

The ice skating spectacular’s silver anniversary show sees Mickey and Minnie taking the audience on a sightseeing holiday through the worlds of The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan and Frozen. With impressive choreography from award-winning skaters set to everyone’s favourite Disney compositions, the show, which has entertained families for 25 years, is certain to be a big hit.

11 TradFest

Celebrating Scotland’s traditional arts, TradFest promises a feast of cultural goodies for all the family. The festival, which will be hosted at 25 different venues, features over 90 events and will include performances from Nuala Kennedy, Martin Simpson, Moishe’s Bagel and Tannara.

An enticing concoction of activities from gigs and ceilidhs to storytelling, talks and folk film will also be on offer.
