Police are treating an attack on a man outside a shop as attempted murder.

The 22-year-old was assaulted outside the Premier Stores on Francis Street in Lochgelly, Fife, at about 9.55pm on Saturday.

Forensic officers are examining the area and nearby Knockhill Close, which have both been cordoned off.

The man is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Detective Inspector Jim Leeson, who is based in Glenrothes, said: "At this early stage of our inquiry we are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area around the time of this violent attack to come forward.

"We believe that the incident started outside the convenience shop and then continued into Knockhill Close behind, where the man was seriously injured.

"Fortunately, and thanks to the assistance of medical staff at the Victoria Hospital, the man is now in a stable condition.

"We are following a positive line of inquiry into this matter, however, I urge anyone with relevant information to come forward immediately."
