GOLFERS just seemed to have more style then. As Royal Troon prepares for this year's Open Championship here is Kel Nagle from Australia and Arnold Palmer playing The Open at Troon in 1973. Kel, who can carry off that hat look, is watching where Arnold's ball is landing. Is it just me, or does that caddy look like former Scotland manager Willie Ormond?

Winner of the tournament was American Tom Weiskopf, and jostling for position behind him on the leaderboard were players including Johnny Miller, Jack Nicklaus, TLee Trevino, Gary Player and Tony Jacklin. It must have been great to have been a spectator then.

Gary Player recovered from a poor start, and he told The Herald's Ian Archer: "My round was better than yesterday's. Then I saw so much sand I thought I was Lawrence of Arabia."

Weiskopf, incidentally, earned £5500 for his 1973 win. This year's Troon champion will take away over £1m.
