CATRIONA MOWAT, vice-president of the Glasgow Caledonian University
branch of the Combined Union Committee, speaks at a rally in the city
in support of university staff who are striking over pay.
The group have been picketing the campus as part of a two-day nationwide
strike, which ends today. They are fighting for better pay, claiming that
since 2009 the cumulative loss to annual wages is 14.5 per cent.
Campaigners also say that despite the Equal Pay Act, the gender pay gap
currently stands at £528 million. There are also claims the universities
sector has built up £1 billion in operating surpluses.
Universities Scotland said the sector takes pay equality “very seriously
and the evidence at a national level confirms that good progress has
been made towards closing the gap.”
