Police are treating the death of a woman found near an Aberdeenshire castle ruin as unexplained.

Emergency services were called to Whistleberry Castle near Kinneff at about 1.20am on Friday.

A man was also found injured at the scene and was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where he is said to be in a stable condition.

A police spokesman said: "Police Scotland can confirm that officers are continuing to investigate the unexplained death of a female in the Whistleberry Castle area of Kinneff.

"A male was also taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with non-life threatening injuries.

"The investigation is at an early stage and enquiries are ongoing."
