ONE of the members of Britain’s only resident Orca population has been spotted off the Isle of Coll in the Inner Hebrides.

The Killer Whale, called John Coe, is known for his large and irregularly shaped dorsal fin with a distinctive notch cut out.

There have been sightings of him recorded all over Britain and Ireland since the early '90's, when he has been seen on his own or with other members of the pod.

Estimates of his age as at least 40 to 50 years old, which is nearing the upper end of life expectancy for male Orcas in the wild.

Shane Wasik, from Basking Shark Scotland, said the Killer Whale was spotted when a group were in snorkelling.

He said: "As the population is so small and sighting infrequent is was so special to see him in glorious conditions."

John Coe is part of the resident Hebrides pod, which now only has eight members after female Orca Lulu was found washed up on the Isle of Tiree at the start of this year.
