SCOTTISH author Irvine Welsh has weighed in on the Brexit debate by describing the Leave leaders in terms worthy of one of his questionable characters.

The writer, known for his dark portrayal of Scotland's underbelly, took to Twitter following the news Nigel Farage has stood down as the leader of UKIP to lay into both Nigel and Boris.

He wrote: "Johnson and Farage - a couple of jakeys who wake up from a binge having s**t the bed, then sneak out the doss house by the back door."

The Herald:

"Nigel p****d in the swimming pool and has therefore reluctantly tended his resignation as self-appointed lifeguard."

Farage stood down as UKIP leader today claiming he had achieved everything he had aimed for when he entered politics.

The Eurosceptic, who failed to win a seat in Westminster in last year's election, said: "The victory for the Leave side in the referendum means that my political ambition has been achieved.

The Herald:

"I came into this struggle from business because I wanted us to be a self-governing nation, not to become a career politician."

Welsh's humorous comparison follows last week's expletive-riddled critique of Boris Johnson from Ewan McGregor, who starred in the film version of the author's Trainspotting.

McGregor slammed Johnson in a foul mouthed tweet for the Brexiteer's decision to not run as Tory leader.
