A 40-year-old man has been detained after a suspicious package was found an address in Edinburgh.

Surrounding homes were evacuated on Monday evening when specialist engineers from the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) assessed the package at an address in the Niddrie area, a suburb south east of the capital.

Engineers later found that the package was not a viable device and posed no threat to the public.

A Police Scotland spokesman said earlier: "Police in Edinburgh attended an address in Niddrie after concern was raised about a suspcious package earlier today.

"Specialist engineers from the EOD attended.

"The surrounding homes have been evacuated as a precaution whilst engineers assess the package."
